IChO Theoretical Prep
IChO problems live at the edge of undergraduate chemistry. This course bridges the gap — covering topics not taught in AP or most olympiad curricula, at the level of rigor needed to compete internationally.
About this course
IChO is one of the most demanding science competitions in the world. The theoretical problems require undergraduate-level mastery of topics that most high school curricula don't cover at all — statistical mechanics, quantum chemistry, advanced synthesis, and spectroscopic interpretation.
This course is for students who have already proven themselves at USNCO and need the advanced curriculum to compete at the international level. Small group, application-based, and built around the actual IChO preparatory problems.
What you'll cover
- 1Advanced coordination and inorganic chemistry
- 2Physical chemistry: statistical mechanics and quantum basics
- 3Spectroscopic problem-solving (NMR, MS, IR)
- 4Reaction mechanism design and retrosynthesis
- 5IChO preparatory problem deep-dives (2010–2025)

Frequently asked
How do I know if I'm ready?
If you've placed at a USNCO Local Exam and want to go further, you're probably ready. Apply and we'll figure it out in the application conversation.
How many students are in each group?
Six maximum. This is closer to private tutoring than a course.
What's the time commitment?
Significant. IChO prep is not casual — expect 10–15 hrs/week during peak preparation.
