Eat the Textbook: Calculus

Calculus is the study of change — but most courses never tell you that. This one starts with what calculus is actually doing, and builds up from there.

About this course

Calculus is secretly simple. It's the formalization of two ideas: how fast is something changing, and how much has it accumulated? Most calculus courses bury these ideas under notation and procedure.

This course keeps them front and center. Every technique is derived, not just shown. By the end, you'll be able to read and write calculus the way a mathematician does — because you'll understand what the symbols actually mean.

What you'll cover

  • 1Limits and continuity — what calculus is actually doing
  • 2Derivatives: the geometry and the machinery
  • 3Integration: area, accumulation, and the fundamental theorem
  • 4Series, sequences, and convergence
  • 5Multivariable calculus and why it matters

Who this is for

Audience

Anyone who survived calculus but couldn't explain it

Prerequisites

Pre-calculus or strong algebra background.

Chemical engineering PhD candidate, Quantic MBA, former boarding school faculty, and CBRN AI safety scientist at Reinforce Labs. Previously UCSB B.S. Chemistry, Harvard/Amgen, and IB + AP classroom instructor. Teaches at the intersection of chemistry, AI, and systems thinking.

Frequently asked

Is this for AP Calculus prep?

It covers AP AB and BC content, but the framing is deeper than AP. AP students will be well-prepared. Non-AP students will still understand calculus.

Do you cover multivariable calc?

Yes — the final module introduces multivariable calculus with enough depth to make subsequent courses (physics, differential equations) make sense.

I took calculus years ago and forgot everything. Will this work?

Yes. A lot of students take this as a re-learn rather than a first-learn. The first-principles approach actually helps with re-learning — you're building new foundations, not trying to remember old ones.
